I have never seen anything like this. I had no idea American Staffordshire Terriers could, or rather, would climb a tree. This is amazing!

Different people have mixed views on teaching Amstaffs to play Tug-Of-War. However, you just don’t know how much fun she has playing tug. She’s a good girl and I’ve always been extremely careful to not let the game get out of hand or be played inappropriately. She is aware of when is an appropriate time to play tug and when isn’t. Owning an American Staffordshire Terrier is a responsibility, more so than owning a smaller less powerful dog and I’ve taken that into consideration at all times, even during play.

As usual, if Macy had persisted, the cat would’ve surely won. Lucky for Macy, she’s learned a few things over the years. Namely, THE KITTY ALWAYS WINS.
This is yet one more example of how terribly vicious Amstaffs are not.

How important is obedience training, really?

In some breeds, training is either less or more important than in others. I feel like I have a duty as an Amstaff owner to reiterate time and again that obedience training in this breed is not optional; it is of great importance. There are things that can be pushed to the wayside if money is an issue: professional dental cleaning, or professional nail trimming. Obedience training is not one of those things.

This particular breed is one of the most loving, but also one of the most stubborn. It is necessary from a very young age to teach your Amstaff puppy that you are the boss and that you are the pack leader. If training is not done early on, you will find yourself with a bullheaded dog that refuses to listen. Sometimes, this is ok, but there are other, more important times, that it may be imperative that they listen. Here’s why: American Staffordshire Terriers have a natural dog aggression. This doesn’t mean that they will attack every dog or cat. This doesn’t mean that they need to be “kept away” from other animals. This does mean that they need to be properly socialized and taught that above all, you are in charge.

The ramifications of a disobedient dog with natural aggressive instincts towards other animals can be fierce: because of the breed stigma surrounding this breed, consequences can include a fine, a ticket or to the other extreme, euthanization of your beloved pet. We will delve deeper into this topic as time goes on, but overall, I had to put it out there that if you are considering this type of dog, please set aside proper money for obedience classes once your puppy is approximately 16 weeks of age.

There, I said it. I’ll be saying it again and again I’m sure.
